Small Colony Variants of Staphylococcus aureus and Pacemaker-related Infection

I caused by Staphylococcus aureus range from mild skin infections to acute life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. However, S. aureus may also cause a chronic disease with persistent and recurrent infections. Skin and soft tissue infections, chronic osteomyelitis, and persistent infections in patients with cystic fibrosis have been associated with small col...

Rat model of experimental endocarditis.

A simple model of infective endocarditis was produced in rats. With the aid of a guide wire, polyethylene catheters were passed into the left ventricle through the right carotid artery of Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 300 to 350 g. A volume of 1 ml of an overnight culture of Streptococcus mitis, Staphylococcus aureus, or Streptococcus faecalis was intravenously injected 1 to 2 days after cathete...

Small Colony variants of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from a patient with infective endocarditis: a case report and review of the literature

Staphylococcus aureus produces a particular morphological variant called small colony variant (SCV) which is responsible for persistent subclinical infections in predisposed individuals and is usually resistant to aminoglycosides and cell wall active antibiotics. Infections by SCV of S. aureus are an upcoming problem due to difficulty in laboratory diagnosis and resistance to antimicrobial chem...

The Induction of Small Colony Variant Staphylococcus aureus in Artificial Sputa Media

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that has adapted to the respiratory tract due to its metabolic versatility, but is normally associated with the skin and mucus membranes (Parker and Prince, 2012). Small colony variants (SCV) are a subpopulation of bacteria. Characteristics of S. aureus SCV are decreased αcytotoxin activity, auxotrophic growth deficiency, deficiency in electron...

Left ventricular assist device vegetation: "cure" without device explantation.

Infection following the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a life-threatening complication with mortality rates ranging from 15% to 44%. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are the most frequently identified pathogens and are responsible for 60% of LVAD-related infections, local as well as systemic. In this report we describe the successful therapeutic m...
